About Andy Crowhurst

Andy has been working for himself since 1997

Andy Crowhurst First Aid TrainerAndy joined the British Red Cross as a First Aid trainee after seeing the Red Cross in action at an event he was organising with some colleagues at Reading University. Their friendliness and competency that weekend made him want to do the same. That was in 1987.

Andy joined the Wallingford Red Cross First Aid Group and worked his way through the badges - First Aid, Nursing, Ambulance Aid and Defibrillation whilst attending hundreds of First Aid Duties from village fetes to WOMAD and Blenheim Horse Trials. He was heavily involved with the Red Cross Holidays during this time, as a helper caring on a 1:1 basis with the Guests on holiday and later as a staff member. After a few years he gained what was then called his 'Demonstrator' and subsequently his 'Trainer' certification and taught First Aid for a number of years both within the Red Cross and at Adult FE Classes in Watlington.

After a couple of years' hiatus when he left the Red Cross, moved house, got married and (co-) started a family he responded to an advert in the local newspaper for a new level of volunteer Ambulance staff - a Community Responder. This was a new concept and Royal Berkshire Ambulance (as it was then) was just getting to grips with it.

He and five others became the founding members of Maidenhead Community Responders. Gradually, others dropped out and new recruits came along and Andy, alongside the one remaining founder now run the Group with currently 15 members, 9 kits and a vehicle. He has well over 1,000 callouts to his name, tens of Cardiac Arrests attended and is jointly reponsible for a number of Cardiac Arrest patients whose lives were either extended for a few hours or have made a full recovery and are walking around today.

In 2016, Andy and his co-founder were thrilled to receive the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service on behalf of the whole group. This is the equivalent of an MBE for groups and is a very prestigious honour.
