This is the 2-day Ofsted, EYFS, CSSIW and SureStart compliant course. It is available as a 2-day course or a Blended course with the first 6 hours taken as an online course.

We can combine this with the 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course certified by 4 Minutes. It will require additional time (30 Minutes) and cost (£100 + £20 per learner for the Certificate), but saves your staff having to attend two courses. Let us know when you enquire

Who is the 2 day Paediatric First Aid for?

The course is aimed at anybody who comes into contact with children including pre-school staff, nursery staff, play workers, children centre staff, teachers, Learning Support Assistants, holiday camp workers, parent and toddler group volunteers, child minders, nannies, foster carers, au pairs, parent helpers, babysitters, community workers, youth workers, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. If you are likely to take your groups outside on field trips we also offer an enhanced Outdoor Paediatric First Aid course.

As of 3rd April 2017, maintained schools, non-maintained schools, independent schools, all providers on the Early Years Register and all providers registered with an early years childminder agency must comply with the latest Statutory framework as detailed here:

Paragraph 3.25 is the main paragraph listing the requirements with Annex A detailing the criteria for effective First Aid Training (in other words, the course syllabi). 4 Minutes courses cover the content required for both the 6-hour and the 12-hour courses.

If you wish to obtain the Millie’s Mark for your Organisation, this is the qualification that all your staff will need.

No previous first aid experience is required to attend this course.

About this qualification

This qualification is built from 2 mandatory units of assessment, taught through a modular and progressive training structure
Unit 1 Paediatric Emergency First Aid
Unit 2 Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

Passing both units leads to the Paediatric First Aid qualification or, for Regulated courses, the Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (VTQ). Both qualifications are EYFS compliant.

Syllabus

This is the syllabus for the 4 Minutes 12-hour First Aid course as laid down by the Statutory Framework

Day 1 / First 6 hours (also known as Emergency Paediatric First Aid and anyone attending just day 1 can receive a certificate in Emergency Paediatric First Aid

1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
   • Explain the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
   • Explain how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
   • Identify when to use personal protective equipment when providing first aid
   • Identify contents of a paediatric first aid kit
   • Identify the need to complete an accident report/incident record
   • Define an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment
2. Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
   • Conduct a scene survey
   • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
   • Identify when to call for help
3. Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
   • Place an infant and a child in the recovery position
   • Continually monitor an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position
   • Assist an infant and a child who is experiencing a seizure
4. Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (including agonal breathing)
   • Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive child who is not breathing normally
   • Administer CPR using an infant and a child manikin
   • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator using an infant and a child mannikin
5. Help a baby or child who is choking
   • Identify when choking is mild and severe
   • Administer first aid to an infant and a child who is choking
6. Help a baby or child who is bleeding
   • Explain the types and severity of bleeding in infants and children
   • Control external bleeding
7. Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolaemic shock)
8. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries
   • Bites (human and animal)
   • Stings (bees and wasps)
   • Small cuts
   • Grazes
   • Bumps and bruises
   • Small splinters
   • Nose bleeds

Day 2 / Second 6 hours

• Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
• Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
• Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
• Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
• Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
• Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
• Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
• Help a baby or child with an eye injury
• Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
• Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
• Help a baby or child having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; an allergic reaction; meningitis; and/or febrile convulsions
• Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)

Note that if you choose the Blended option (video for the first 6 hours, classroom for the second 6 hours) the order of topics is different and blended courses cannot be run in parallel with classroom-only courses.
