About this qualification

This course is designed for anybody who might have to identify and manage emergency situations, or deal with very minor everyday occurrences, whilst looking after young children and babies. This qualification meets requirements for those working in early years settings. We use the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document for course development and structure.

This qualification is available as a non-Regulated or a Regulated course. If Regulated, it is part of the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) regulated by Ofqual (the official regulator of qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland). Note that Paediatric First Aid courses do not need to be Regulated to comply with EYFS

The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current Paediatric First Aid certificate to be on the premises or outings at all times when children are present. According to EYFS guidance for effective paediatric training:

  • Training is designed for workers caring for children in the absence of their parents
  • The training leading to a certificate or a renewal certificate is a minimum of 12 hours
  • The first aid certificate must be renewed every 3 years
  • Resuscitation and other training equipment includes baby and junior models, as appropriate
  • Training covers the appropriate contents of a first aid box for babies and children
  • Training should include recording accidents and incidents

This qualification is built from 2 mandatory units of assessment, taught through a modular and progressive training structure
Unit 1 Paediatric Emergency First Aid
Unit 2 Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

Note: Day 1 is 0900 – 1600hrs  Day 2 is 0930 – 1630hrs
